Description

Black Iron Oxide is a specially manufactured dark powdered pigment ideal for limewash applications. We selected this pigment for our Limewash line because of its excellent tinting strength, making it ideal for achieving rich, dark grey finishes. Please note that due to the natural properties of limewash, pigmented washes tend to dry lighter than the initial mixture. We advise performing testing before the full application.

Product Details

  • Outstanding resistance to UV rays
  • Stable colour with lime and cement surfaces

Note: The volume listed is an estimate; pigments are measured by weight for consistency. The weights for Black Iron Oxide (product code 209) are:

  • 250ml – approximately 235g
  • 1 litre – approximately 940g
  • 10 litres – approximately 9.4kg

Preparation

Mix the dry pigment with warm water to form a slurry, ensuring even saturation before incorporating into the limewash. This prevents dry pigment pockets that could cause uneven colouring. Add the slurry to the limewash and stir thoroughly.

Usage Guidance

A 25kg bucket of mature lime putty combined with roughly 25 litres of water produces around 45 litres of limewash. To maintain the integrity of the limewash, do not add more than 2 litres of dry pigment (about 5% by volume) per batch. The deep grey shade seen in the example results from adding the maximum pigment amount, with a consistency similar to single cream. Lighter shades can be achieved by reducing the pigment quantity. You can blend different dry pigments from our range to customise colours.

Note: Lime putty density varies; adjust water volume as needed. Limewash should be runny, with a texture between milk and single cream. Thicker mixes are prone to cracking.

Coverage

Applying 10 litres of limewash typically covers 30-40 square metres per coat. We recommend applying 3-5 coats initially. Coverage depends on the mix consistency and substrate conditions.
