Description

Red Iron Oxide is a synthetic crimson pigment in powder form, ideal for lime-based coatings. We selected this pigment for our limewash products because of its vibrant tinting power, making it an excellent choice for achieving deep red hues.

Due to its natural properties, limewash tends to dry lighter than the initial colour mixture. It is advisable to perform preliminary tests to determine the final shade before complete application.

Product Features

  • Created from natural base pigments
  • Exceptional resistance to UV damage
  • Stable colouration with lime and cement surfaces
  • Non-toxic formulation

The listed volume is an estimate; pigments are measured by weight for consistency. The weights for Red Iron Oxide (269) by volume are approximately:

  • 250ml – 225g
  • 1 litre – 900g
  • 10 litres – 9kg

Preparation

To ensure even colour distribution, mix the dry pigment with warm water to form a slurry, which helps saturate the pigment thoroughly before adding it to limewash. Adding this slurry to the lime mixture and blending thoroughly will prevent dry pigment pockets that could cause uneven colouring.

Mixing Instructions

A typical batch combines one 25kg container of mature lime putty with roughly 25 Litres of water, producing about 45 Litres of limewash. To maintain the integrity of the limewash, add no more than 2 Litres (around 5% of the total volume) of dry pigment.

Colour

The vibrant hue shown in the image was achieved by using the maximum pigment amount (5% by volume) in a limewash with a consistency akin to single cream. Using lesser amounts will result in softer, lighter shades.

All pigments in our limewash range can be blended for custom colours and hues.

Coverage

Applying 10 Litres of limewash typically covers 30 to 40 square metres per coat, with 3 to 5 coats recommended for optimal coverage.

The actual coverage depends on the mixing consistency and the surface being treated.
