Description

Red Ochre is a natural earth pigment that imparts a soft orange-red tint when combined with Limewash. These natural pigments, derived from earth and ochre, naturally produce gentle hues and attractive pastel shades, even when used in larger quantities. Consider using our Red Iron Oxide pigment instead for a more intense red.

Keep in mind that due to the properties of limewash, pigmented washes tend to dry lighter than their original mixed colour. It’s advisable to conduct initial tests before applying the final coat.

Product Details

  • Made from natural earth pigment
  • Highly resistant to UV rays
  • Stable colour with lime and cement
  • Non-toxic and safe

Volume

Note: The listed volume is approximate; pigments are measured by weight for consistency. For Red Ochre (178), the weight per volume is:

  • 250ml = 130g
  • 1 litre = 520g
  • 10 litres = 5.2kg

Mixing

Combine the dry pigment powder with warm water to form a slurry, ensuring the pigment is fully saturated. This prevents dry spots that can cause uneven finish colouring. Add the slurry to your limewash mixture and stir thoroughly.

Application

A typical batch using a 25kg tub of mature lime putty mixed with about 25 litres of water yields roughly 45 litres of limewash. To maintain quality, avoid exceeding 2 litres of dry pigment (approximately 5% by volume) in this quantity to prevent weakening the limewash’s integrity.

The image's colour depth was achieved by adding the maximum pigment amount (5%) to limewash. Use less pigment for lighter shades.

Blending different pigments from our range allows you to craft various unique hues.

Note: Lime putty density can vary, so adjust water volume accordingly. Aim for a limewash consistency like milk or single cream—thicker mixes may crack.

Coverage

Applying 10 litres of limewash typically covers 30-40 square meters per coat. We recommend 3 to 5 coats for best results. The actual coverage depends on the mix and surface being painted.
